What is a blind item?

• A blind item is a news story, typically in a gossip column, in which the details of the matter are reported while the identities of the people involved are not revealed
• The invention of the blind item is credited to William d'Alton Mann (1839–1920), publisher of Town Topics, who often used it for blackmail
  • I can’t believe blind items are so old? Like if he died in 1920, they have to be older than that
• The advent of gossip websites brought about more public debate and speculation about the individual blind item stories, and also about the ethics surrounding the practice

**Note that they always say in Beyond the Blinds is that this is all allegedly. Don’t want to get in trouble**

• Yachting
  • This is something I didn’t realize but had always seen picture of celebrities on yachts everywhere
  • Apparently yachting is where people have sex with really rich people who own the yachts / friends with the owners of the yachts
  • They do it for money, to get projects greenlight or funded, or to look like they have a lot of money being on an expensive yacht
  • People who yacht: Lindsay Lohan, Nina Dobrev, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid
    • They then drag other people into it like Lindsay pulls her sister into it
  • According to blinds, Nina Dobrev starting yachting in at least 2016
    • However, Nina Dobrev and yachting is not searched for at all in 2016
    • Searches for her and yachting only really start in 2021
    • I do wonder if the reason it jumps so much now is
      • 1. Because she’s generally been in the news more because she’s dating Shaun White and he was in the Olympics
      • 2. Because of Beyond the Blinds podcast lolz

• Compared to searches for Nina’s name in general, yachting doesn’t even register in popularity

• Drug / Alcohol Use
  • I think I’m just an innocent and ignorant person when it comes to drugs, but I didn’t realize that literally EVERYONE does cocaine
    • So many blinds are about celebrities and how much they do cocaine
  • Obviously celebrities have more money so they can afford more drugs

• Ariana Grande
  • She has cocaine blinds since since 2014 
  • This is fucked up because she dated people with serious drug problems (Mac Miller and Pete Davidson) and publicly would give off the vibe that she was trying to help them
    • In May 2018 she said “I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety and prayed for his balance for years (and always will, of course) but shaming / blaming women for a man’s inability to keep his s—t together is a very major problem.”
    • After Mac Miller died this was said “Ari’s friends recalled that the brunette beauty didn’t sleep because she wanted to make sure the Pennsylvania native wasn’t heavily drinking or doing drugs. “It’s pretty all-consuming,” the pop star said. “By no means was what we had perfect, but, like, f—k. He was the best person ever, and he didn’t deserve the demons he had. I was the glue for such a long time, and I found myself becoming … less and less sticky. The pieces just started to float away.””
  • I think the public would really hate her if they knew that
  • In the Google search graph, it’s hard to parse out what is actually about her since she dated so many people with drug problems so people may have been searching about them
    • The big spike seen in September 2018 is likely because that is when Mac Miller died

• There were more searches for Ariana Grande and cocaine, so people may have known more about her drug use, but it also could be related to the people she is in relationships with

• Jimmy Fallon
  • Allegedly Jimmy Fallon is a huge alcoholic and does cocaine
  • This actually came out in the regular news after 2015 where he almost lost his finger, chipped his tooth, cut his hand on a broken Jager bottle, etc.
    • Articles start to call him out on it being from drinking
    • “He’s a mess,” says a Manhattan bartender who has served the host over the years, adding, “I love him.” She recalls a time around 2009 when a happily wasted Fallon, then the newly tapped host of “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” played beer pong with the staff at the now-closed Whiskey River in Union Square until 5:30 a.m., before continuing the party upstairs at the bar’s private apartment. “Everything you’ve heard [about his behavior] is true,” she says.
    • But he tried to play it all off as being clumsy, etc.
  • There are drinking blinds starting in 2013 or before
    • But there aren’t many searches until it spikes in November 2015 
    • This is after the year of the finger and other incidents

• Relationships
  • Generally, celebrities have a lot of of pressure about their relationships and I don’t envy that for them
  • They also have to be in fake relationships to sell things
  • Contract couples are everywhere
    • Harry Styles and Taylor Swift, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, Will and Jada Smith, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, Aaron Rodgers and Shayleen Woodley, Camilla Cabello and Shaun Mendez, anyone who stars with each other in a movie basically, etc.
    • Apparently the song Blank Space is about contract couples - this makes sense “I’ve got a blank space baby and I’ll write your name”
  • Ryan Reynolds is apparently very abusive to Blake Lively
    • Ever since they started dating there are blinds that say he has to approve what she wears, doesn’t let her do jobs, etc.
    • He also apparently tried to do the same to Scarlett Johannsen but she didn’t really bend to it
    • Blake used to be out there all the time, wanted to be seen and social climb (she was a Harvey Weinstein girl like she tried to make it big) but then when she started dating Ryan, she doesn’t really do that much
    • Everyone thinks they’re funny and have a great relationship because of their banter back and forth online, but actually allegedly Ryan is super abusive
      • “Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are undoubtedly one of the cutest couples in Hollywood, from the way they adorable discuss their parenting styles to poking fun at each other on social media.”
  • Ariana Grande cheats with Jimmy Fallon

• Sexuality
  • Many celebrities are allegedly gay and have to hide it
  • It’s unfortunate because I think in this day and age it wouldn’t matter that much
    • For instance the woman on DWTS Anne Heche who dated Ellen and it kind of ruined her career because people thought people wouldn’t believe she could be in a straight relationship - many people now wouldn’t care about that as much
  • Taylor Swift and Dianna Agron or Karlie Kloss
    • Many of the clues that Taylor leaves in her music can apparently be linked back to things with either Dianna or Karlie
      • Taylor misspells Hyannis Port in her album booklet as Hyiannis Port, the timing of things she says in songs match up to Dianna, writing on Dianna’s wall
    • There are photos of Taylor and Karlie kissing on the lips at an event
    • She also gets blasted for appropriating gay culture so the theory is that she is actually gay and isn’t appropriating anything
  • Nick Jonas is allegedly gay
    • All of his relationships are PR
      • His wedding with Priyanka was apparently very sponsored (Target, Tiffany, etc.)
      • Priyanka apparently rose to fame by sleeping with executives and was kicked out of Bollywood for it so she had to get something to save her image
    • Something Beyond the Blinds brought up that I thought was interesting is how they were marketed as the Christian boys with purity rings so he might not be able to be open about it
    • He is linked to Aaron Rodgers, Cord Overstreet
    • There isn’t much search popularity for Nick Jonas being gay - the spike is around the time he was on a TV show and his character was revealed to be gay so I’m going to guess that is why

• Just General Bad Behavior
  • There are many examples of this just general attitudes and egos by celebrities
    • This makes sense - they get famous and get an ego - that’s common
  • Many are accused of being rude to staff and such (Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Blake Lively, etc.)
  • One of the most hilarious things to me is that Lindsay Lohan apparently lies and steals all the time
    • This is confirmed because she got arrested and charged with stealing a necklace
      • “Lohan was charged with felony grand theft in connection with the $2,500 gold and semi-precious stone necklace that went missing from Kamofie & Co. on Jan. 22. After the store told police the necklace was missing, an associate of Lohan's returned it. Lohan has reportedly said that her stylist borrowed the necklace and returned it to the store.”
• She also apparently had a really fucked up childhood - her parents are really bad stage parents
• There are blinds from 2006 and 2016 saying how she steals
  • The 2006 blind was from before her big stealing situation in 2011
  • The spike in the graph is from the same time as the necklace incident

Conclusions (summary of data)

• All of this shit could be false and I’m just buying into it
• But some things we now know are true (i.e. Lindsay and stealing) so it definitely isn’t all made up
• Celebrities are allowed to have their own private lives and I feel bad that they have to run around hiding things
• Everyone needs to stop doing coke plz
